We are pleased to announce Dr. CK(Chung-Kon) Ko joined HANYANG as of March 1, 2013. Dr. Ko has a famous reputation in Korea as being an expert in the fields of patent licensing, patent brokerage, and patent portfolio.
He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from MIT, and PH.D degree from Columbia University. After working as a researcher at IBM and a professor at Rutgers University, he received his J.D. from Rutgers Law School and became a member of New York, New Jersey and U.S. Patent Bar.
Dr. Ko was in charge of patent litigation at Pennie & Edmonds. He returned to Korea as vice president of Samsung Electronics, responsible for founding industry standards (DLNA, Coral), joint venture (Toshiba-Samsung JV), and mobile software development (OMA DRM and security). Then, he became a government official as a founding director of IT IPR Center, responsible for managing intellectual property assets from Korea’s government sponsored R&D programs in information technology.
After his tenure with Government, he joined LG Electronics as an in-house patent counsel and vice president, and took the responsibility for overseas patent litigations against competitors and NPEs, prosecution (DTV, LTE), licensing, and IP monetization including ATSC patent pool launch consisting of LG and Zenith’s DTV portfolios through MPEG LA, and HE AAC audio pool licensing with Via Licensing.
In 2011, Dr. Ko was invited as the executive vice president at Intellectual Discovery, the largest Korean invention capital and a joint venture between the Korean Government and Korean Companies. During his time at Intellectual Discovery, he was in charge of purchasing over 1,500 patents and licensing.
